Hughes and his musically formidable trio brings these dynamic young song stylists from the International Jazz Scene to True Blue Jazz\, in their first area performance together! \nVuyo Sotashe was the winner of the 2014 vocal competition at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival\, 2nd place in 2014’s Montreax Jazz “Best Male Jazz Vocalist”\, and a win at the Thelonius Monk Festival in 2015. He received his Bachelor’s of Music at the University of Cape Town\, he is a Fulbright Scholar\, and he recently received his Master’s of Music from William Patterson University. He will be appearing again\, in the upcoming 2016 Montreux Jazz Festival. \nChiara Izzi made her International debut at the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition in 2011\, where she was awarded first prize by the living musical legend Quincy Jones. Following this award the vocalist was invited to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2012 opening Paco de Lucìa’s concert. Award winning Italian singer\, songwriter Chiara Izzi has been described by Jazz Times as “a talent to be heard\, admired and anticipated” after the release of her debut album “Motifs”. DESCRIPTION:Jimmy Heath\, an NEA Jazz Master and ASCAP’s 2011 Jazz Hall of Fame Living Legend inductee\, is widely recognized as one of the greats in jazz. He has long been recognized as a brilliant saxophonist and a magnificent composer\, arranger and educator. The middle brother of the legendary Heath Brothers (bassist Percy\, of The Modern Jazz Quartet and highly renowned drummer\, Albert “Tootie”)\, he has performed with nearly all of the jazz greats of the last 60 years\, from Howard McGhee\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Clifford Brown\, Dinah Washington and Miles Davis to Wynton Marsalis. \nTrue Blue Jazz is ecstatic to present Jimmy Heath and his Big Band for two shows on October 15th as part of this year’s True Blue Jazz series. The legendary Jazz Master kicked off his 90th birthday celebration tour at the Blue Note in New York City in March. True Blue Jazz founders Eddie Sherman and Peggy Raley attended the sold out performance\, thrilled to be in the presence of this musical icon. Like the rest of the standing-room-only crowd\, we were rewarded with an electrifying performance by both the bandleader and the band. \nHeath’s career got off to any early start – in 1943 at the age of 17 he started touring with the Calvin Todd band. In 1948\, he performed in the First International Jazz Festival in Paris with McGhee\, sharing the stage with Coleman Hawkins\, Slam Stewart\, and Erroll Garner. One of his earliest big bands as bandleader (1947-1948) in Philadelphia included John Coltrane\, Benny Golson\, Specs Wright\, Cal Massey\, Johnny Coles\, Ray Bryant and Nelson Boyd. Charlie Parker and Max Roach even sat in on one occasion. \nDuring his career\, Heath has performed on more than 100 albums\, including seven with the Heath Brothers and 12 as leader. He has also written more than 125 compositions\, many of which have become jazz standards and have been recorded by other jazz artists\, including Art Farmer\, Cannonball Adderley\, Clark Terry\, Chet Baker\, Miles Davis\, James Moody\, Milt Jackson\, Ahmad Jamal\, Ray Charles\, Dizzy Gillespie\, J.J. Johnson and Dexter Gordon. Heath has also composed extended works including seven suites\, two string quartets and a symphony. \nRenowned for his work as a Professor of Music at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College\, Heath maintains an extensive performance and teaching schedule and continues to conduct workshops and clinics throughout the United States\, Europe\, and Canada. He has also taught jazz studies at Jazzmobile\, Houstonic College\, City College of New York\, and the New School. \nJimmy Heath turns 90 on October 25\, 2016. True Blue Jazz has the distinct honor to celebrate this birthday with him before he goes on to gala celebrations at both Lincoln Center in New York City and The Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. at the end of the month. This will the first time many people in the Cape region get to see and hear Mr. Heath\, but it won’t be the first time he has played here. He played Rosedale Beach in Oak Orchard\, Delaware in 1943 and again in 1947. Known as the place\, “Where the stars came to play” it was a watershed location during segregation that hosted everyone from Duke Ellington and Count Basie to Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. \nFor over 60 years\, the legendary Heath Brothers have been synonymous with great jazz. Although Percy passed away in 2005\, Jimmy and Tootie have pressed on\, continuing to make great music. The Heath Brothers will perform this summer at the Newport Jazz Festival. They are the last of the truly innovating\, fabulous musicians of the twentieth century. \nTrumpeter\, Wynton Marsalis\, wrote the introduction to Jimmy’s autobiography\, “I Walked with Giants”. He speaks of this great group of musicians and Jimmy Heath\, saying\, “They played with a swagger forged in the Great Depression\, tested by war\, and proven in the cultural neglect of postwar prosperity. In the early twenty-first century\, Jimmy Heath is one of the last of these jazzmen. Past the civil rights movement\, the rock ‘n’ roll revolution\, and the computer age; through generations x\, y and z: and up to the hip-hop nation\, his presence speaks to the ageless vitality of this music. He stays very much on the scene\, composing\, arranging\, teaching and playing with wit and vigor. Jimmy brings the generosity of spirit and downright soul that makes jazz worth the dues paid to play it.” \nTrue Blue Jazz invites you to come witness living history and experience music on a level rarely seen in this day and age. Our True Blue Jazz Series runs from Oct. 12th through Oct. 16th in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Jimmy Heath and his Big Band will perform on Saturday Oct. 15th at Clear Space Theatre with two shows at 7:30pm and 9:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:Whether taking the stage as bandleaders or sidemen\, booked on a recording session\, appearing at area Festivals\, or standing before student musicians in a workshop as jazz educators…these musicians seem to leap to a higher form of energy and output when these four gentlemen of jazz come together for a night of music. \nGerald Chavis\, a dominant Trumpet Player on the Delaware Valley Jazz landscape for 30 years\, was named “Best Jazz Artist” by the Delaware Valley Reader’s Music Poll for the release of his second CD entitled “It’s A ‘G’ Thang”. He is an Individual Artist Fellowship Award Recipient from the Delaware State Division of the Arts. His credits include performing and/or recording with such national acts as Mick Jagger\, Phyllis Hyman\, Donald Byrd\, The Temptations\, The Dells\, and The Spinners\, as well as local Delaware organizations including Opera Delaware\, Christina Cultural Arts Center\, and others. He is a staff musician at St. Paul’s Baptist Church in West Chester\, PA.\, and is Director for the Wilmington Youth Jazz Band. \nJeff Knoettner is the “piano players’ player”. Jeff’s jazz base is drawn from his Berklee College degree in Piano Performance. His improv work on piano takes you somewhere…and it is someplace really enjoyable. Knoettner has performed or recorded with The Clef Club Players\, Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble\, Roger Alderidge\, The Tymes\, Tino Gonzales Band\, (which has opened for blues legends Buddy Guy\, Charlie Musselwhite\, and B.B. King)\, Doc Gibbs (percussionist for Anita Baker\, Whitney Houston\, Bob James\, and Grover Washington). Appearing on Piano or the Hammond B3 Organ\, from the New York State Blues Festival to The Clifford Brown Jazz Festival\, from a Jazz Vespers gig to the Cartoon Christmas Trio…Jeff Knoettner is performing at a level that musicians everywhere aspire to. \nRob Swanson prolifically displays an eclectic range of musical stylings on electric\, upright\, vocals\, and composition. Rob is a Philly Magazine “Best Of Philly” Award Winner and a graduate of the prestigious West Chester School of Music. As well as playing full time\, Rob is an active music educator going on three decades of instruction with a wide range of age groups. Robs’ vehicle for his original music\, The Terra Soul Project\, has recorded two acclaimed CDs. He is founder of The Cartoon Christmas Trio\, a trio dedicated to the great cartoon music of the holiday season. He is a regular bass player with Siora\, Klingon Klez\, and the award winning group\, the Don Eaton Band. \nAn extraordinarily versatile drummer\, Webb has made quite a name for himself locally\, nationally and abroad. He leads several of his own bands including “Webb T’S Fleet” & his latest\, Webb Thomas’ Super Group. His group “Webb T’s Fleet” has received rave reviews at the Mellon Jazz Fest and the Cape May Jazz Fest. He has appeared with Doug Carn\, David ‘Fathead’ Newman\, Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana and most recently with ‘Mr. Killer Joe’ himself – Benny Golson.

DESCRIPTION:Whether taking the stage as bandleaders or sidemen\, booked on a recording session\, appearing at area Festivals\, or standing before student musicians in a workshop as jazz educators…these musicians seem to leap to a higher form of energy and output when these four gentlemen of jazz come together for a night of music. \nGerald Chavis\, a dominant Trumpet Player on the Delaware Valley Jazz landscape for 30 years\, was named “Best Jazz Artist” by the Delaware Valley Reader’s Music Poll for the release of his second CD entitled “It’s A ‘G’ Thang”. He is an Individual Artist Fellowship Award Recipient from the Delaware State Division of the Arts. His credits include performing and/or recording with such national acts as Mick Jagger\, Phyllis Hyman\, Donald Byrd\, The Temptations\, The Dells\, and The Spinners\, as well as local Delaware organizations including Opera Delaware\, Christina Cultural Arts Center\, and others. He is a staff musician at St. Paul’s Baptist Church in West Chester\, PA.\, and is Director for the Wilmington Youth Jazz Band. \nJeff Knoettner is the “piano players’ player”. Jeff’s jazz base is drawn from his Berklee College degree in Piano Performance. His improv work on piano takes you somewhere…and it is someplace really enjoyable. Knoettner has performed or recorded with The Clef Club Players\, Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble\, Roger Alderidge\, The Tymes\, Tino Gonzales Band\, (which has opened for blues legends Buddy Guy\, Charlie Musselwhite\, and B.B. King)\, Doc Gibbs (percussionist for Anita Baker\, Whitney Houston\, Bob James\, and Grover Washington). SUMMARY:Young Jazz Appreciation Night with Eddie Sherman & Peggy Raley
DESCRIPTION:Our commitment and efforts for Young Student Jazz Musicians is our favorite aspect of True Blue Jazz\, and a priority for us. In 2013\, True Blue Jazz revived the Saturday Afternoon Free Concert on the Rehoboth Bandstand as a feature venue for the Cape HS Jazz Band….and in 2015\, we held our first Jazz Workshop placing our Featured Artist Jazz Players in a mentoring musical exchange with the Cape HS Jazz Band. \nFor 2016\, we are interested in expanding opportunities for the young jazz students from our community\, and others\, if possible. That’s why we’ve put together a Young Jazz Appreciation Evening on Wednesday October 12th. It will be a Sussex County Kick Off Event for our True Blue Jazz Series…& we’re looking to make this an annual part of our entire Straight Ahead Jazz Series Concept. \nWe’re creating a night that will be a mix and mingle for Music Families\, their School Music Program Directors\, and a number of our working professional Jazz Players that we will invite to come out to play\, talk Jazz\, and workshop a bit with the kids. You’ll hear the Jazz Players of tomorrow play rehearsed material\, and will even have the Pros & Music Directors work them through an impromptu Jazz Jam. \nPeggy Raley & Eddie Sherman will Host this new twist on the old “Band Boosters” concept. Food & Beverages will be offered.
