After a brief stint as an actor\, carpenter\, bartender and producer for the Museum of Sound Recording… he promptly became a subway musician. \nFrom 1998 to 2001 Lipbone honed his guitar and people skills in subway tunnels beneath Manhattan. By 2002 his craft allowed him to travel and make a living wherever life took him: India\, Europe\, South America\, New Orleans\, San Francisco. On the road\, he forged lifelong collaborative relationships with producers\, artists and masters around the globe. \nIn 2005 Lipbone Redding emerged into New York city’s vibrant East Village nightlife\, where he became a staple of the downtown music scene. From 2005-2012 he held a residency at the tiny but famous Jules Jazz Bistro on historic Saint Mark’s Place. Friday night and Sunday brunch with The Lipbone Orchestra became a regular happening frequented by hipsters and tourists alike. It was amidst the champagne and rowdy cabaret atmosphere that Lipbone developed his signature Jazzy Lip Trombone\, and his unique style of musical storytelling. \n\nMeeting legendary Record Producer and founder of Atlantic Redords\, Ahmet Ertegun\, in 2006 was pivotal for Lipbone. Ahmet motioned for Lipbone to take a seat at his table\, and offered his hand\, then leaned in to confide\, “You play trombone with no trombone\, better than some trombone players that I know.” Lipbone took it as a blessing and hasn’t looked back since. \nSince 2012\, in order to maintain a travel lifestyle 200 engagements per year\, Lipbone has returned to his roots and has sprouted new shoots. Raised in the “Fort Apache” section of the Burroughs of the Bronx (New York City)\, he grew up listening to Puerto Rican\, Afro-Cuban\, Soul\, R&B\, Funk\, etc. Later inspired by Tito Puente\, he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1975 to 1979 earning a Bachelor’s degree in Music. \nIn addition to his pursuits as a performer\, Sanabria is considered one of the foremost scholars of “la tradition” and was honored in 1983 with a National Endowment of the Arts grant as a Jazz performer and educator. While not unique among Latin musicians who acknowledge and celebrate the West African musical roots of Latin American music\, he is arguably one of the most vocal regarding the appropriate respect for the African musical basis of the various forms of Latin Music and American Jazz. Proficient in a number of forms from Cuban “Son” to New York City-originated “Salsa” to Mario Bauza and Dizzy Gillespie–generated “Cubop” or Afro-Cuban Jazz\, Sanabria has recorded with Tito Puente\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Chico O’Farrill\, Celia Cruz\, and the legendary Mario Bauza. \nA professor at The New School Research Jazz Department in New York City\, he has written articles for “Modern Drummer” and “Highlights in Percussion” magazines. Saxophonist Potter’s talent has been lauded by both critics and fans since he burst on to the jazz scene as a 19-year-old playing with bebop icon Red Rodney. Keyboardist Craig Taborn\, guitarist Adam Rogers and drummer Nate Smith are each recognized as leading talents and front their own bands as well. In rehearsal\, band members bring new compositions and work together to understand each new piece. After a huge launch in 2016\, a turnout that filled the House….with the geneorous support of the Bethany Blues Management & Staff….Youth jazz Night is now an annual part of our entire Straight Ahead Jazz Festival Concept for our True Blue Jazz Fest. \nWe created a night that is a “Mix and Mingle” for Music Families\, their School Music Program Directors\, & our working professional Jazz Players that come show up to play\, talk Jazz\, and workshop a bit with the kids. But the focus of the evening is on  the Kids! You’ll hear the Jazz Players of tomorrow play rehearsed material\, and will even have the Pros & Music Directors work them through an impromptu Jazz Jam. \nPeggy Raley & Eddie Sherman will Host this new twist on the old “Band Boosters” concept. Food & Beverages will be available through Bethany Blues Restaurant.
