PIANIST BENNY GREEN • TRUE BLUE JAZZ 9th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY CONCERT

In his own words & with heartfelt expression of love for this music…Jazz…Benny Green writes; “nothing can quite get inside you like the feeling of real Jazz.” From his pre-adolescent days, absorbing the jazz he heard as he sat in the garage studio with his Tenor Saxman Father as he sculpted…Benny learned phrasing, emotion & authenticity from the dominating jazz & blues artists admired by his Father…served up on his Dad’s portable record player.

With inherent natural talent…. schooled by endless musical immersion in jazz & his Dad’s guidance on the importance of being able to read music…Benny Green matured into a jazz force on piano. As a teen he worked in a quintet led by Eddie Hederson. Late High School days found him leading his own band in Yoshi’s Jazz Club in San Francisco. Back in NYC, things took off for Benny Green.

In ’83 performing with Betty Carter, then ’87-’89 a a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, on to Freddie Hubbard’s Quintet, then in ’91 leading his own band & countless sideman gigs or sessions with the likes of Ray Brown, Lewis Nash, Buster Williams, Terence Blanchard, Oscar Peterson, Antonio Hart, Russell Malone, Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove & on & on.

Now in 2025, after release of his ‘ThenAndNow‘ Recording, seasoned jazz piano virtuoso Benny Green is touring his solo piano program. An authentic jazz musician, he stands as a torchbearer for the continuum of straight-ahead jazz piano. Even more appropriately.…Benny Green will bring this solo concert event to True Blue Jazz ~“Where the Jazz Legacy Lives”, as we participate in the global celebration of International Jazz Day. This will be our 9th Annual Concert Event in conjunction with the ‘IJD’ organizers, The Herbie Hancock Institute & UNESCO.
